I didn’t choose the bard life. The bard life chose me.
I drew this rather androgynous lady (man? meh) for the character I’m creating for a new Dungeons & Dragons game. She’s an eladrin (elf, basically) bard and she’s gonna rock out.
This is the first time I’ve tried to draw a manga-ish style person on my iPad. I bought a cheapo stylus with a mesh tip which works okay on my iPad mini. First I created a few sketch layers to get the body shape right.
Then I outlined it using a brush pen tool and added shading in a new layer with a grey brush pen with about 50% transparency.
I hid the sketchy layers and coloured it in using the watercolour tool.
I still find it much easier to watercolour in a messy way and then clean up the edges with the eraser. It helps me to get the colour blending right.
I was surprised at how well it turned out, especially since I was on a plane and I couldn’t use models or look up photos for reference on body posture. Usually I’m much worse at that so I guess practice really does make all the difference.
I have to say, it was much, MUCH easier inking this than it usually is on paper. I’m usually nervous as heck when I ink on paper. I have to make sure that the pencil sketch is absolutely perfect before I ink, and if I make a mistake then it’s all over. That’s why this is the first time I’ve managed to colour and shade one of these like this as well. Heavy use of the “undo” feature is so helpful.
